Meeting people from another country works best when the goal is a respectful conversation, not collecting stereotypes or treating someone as a representative of an entire culture. Meetchi offers two different starting points: live 1v1 video matching and public text-based Global Rooms.
Choose 1v1 or Global Rooms
1v1 video is useful for a focused face-to-face conversation. Start without signup, allow camera and microphone access and enter basic random matching. Optional region or gender preferences require a signed-in Gold account; a paid preference does not guarantee who is online or that a match will be available.
Global Rooms are public text rooms. They are a lower-pressure place to notice an active topic and contribute before deciding whether you want a camera conversation. Do not post contact details or location information in a public room.
Start with curiosity, not assumptions
- Ask “What is a normal weekend like where you live?” rather than assuming a custom applies to everyone.
- Use country and city names carefully, and ask how the other person prefers their name to be pronounced.
- Avoid turning politics, religion, conflict or identity into an interrogation. Let the other person decline a topic.
- Remember that fluency and accent do not measure intelligence. Slow down without speaking to an adult like a child.
- Share your own experience as one example, not as a rule for your culture.
Conversation prompts for cultural exchange
Try: “What food would you recommend to a visitor?”, “Is there a local phrase that does not translate neatly?”, “What music is popular with your friends?”, or “What do visitors usually misunderstand about your city?” Follow the answer instead of jumping through a checklist.
Protect privacy across borders
Do not reveal an address, workplace, school, travel booking or financial information. Assume anything shown on camera could be captured. Leave, report or block when someone uses slurs, sexual pressure, threats or repeated requests for personal contact. Moderation helps but cannot guarantee a respectful match.
